It’s a Saturday morning in late April, just after sunrise. I’m sitting on my sofa wrapped in a blanket, one cat to each sides. The window is open bringing in the first ray of sunlight and some brisk air. This is the season for enjoying breakfast outside. The sun will soon warm Istanbul and this fresh morning will become a pleasant day. Grab a book, a group of friends or just yourself and have breakfast at one of my favorite spots in Istanbul.
Istanbul is bursting with delicious breakfast places. I feel like it’ll almost be impossible to visit each and every one. Although there are many breakfast cafes, most of them serve Turkish breakfast. Lucky me, I love Turkish breakfast but like with everything in life, too much of one thing can get a bit overwhelming sometimes. So I went out in my neighborhood Cihangir and some near-by areas to find the perfect breakfast mix. Meet avocado toast topped with pomegranate and simit bread with homemade mulberry jam. Indulge in poached egg with salmon and Turkish menemen.
6 Favorite Breakfast Spots in Central Istanbul
Why A favorite among expats, tourists and locals alike, Cafe Cuma is located between quirky antique stores. Their outdoor area is like a little green heaven, something that is hard to find in the bustling city center of Istanbul. The menu keeps changing every now and then but the quality of food, the service and the relaxing vibe are top-notch.
What Have avocado toast with pomegranates which is served on homemade sourdough bread and drizzled with delicious olive oil. The pancakes don’t need any explanation, just order them. And the poached eggs on spicy lentils outshines every standard Eggs Benedict.
Where Cafe Cuma, Çukurcuma Street No: 53/A, Çukurcuma – Istanbul
Why Hands down, Journey is my favorite restaurant in Istanbul. I happen to live just a stone-through away so you can find me here for lunch and dinner as well. The atmosphere is laid back, the crowd modern and international and the interior cosy and a little bit cool. However it’s their food that stands out. Journey has an amazing breakfast menu with healthy dishes that only include the highest quality of ingredients – fresh and super tasty.
What At Journey you find something for every taste. I love their spiced granola with fruits and soy milk and my boyfriend usually orders the Paleo breakfast (which is not really paleo but still heavenly) with grain-less bread, avocado, eggs, bacon, camembert, nuts, salad and pesto. Sounds wonderful, right?
Where Journey Lounge, Akarsu Cad. No:21/a Cihangir Beyoğlu İstanbul
Why Although a little further away from Cihangir and more on the expensive side, Delicatessen is still a favorite among locals and expats as they serve…well, you might have figured by now…delicious food. Located in the lush neighborhood of Nisantasi, it offers a beautiful setting indoors and outdoors. Whoever can pass by the cake and dessert counter at the entrance without shouting out an order to the nearest waiter, deserve a medal of self-control.
What Yes, try their cake because cake for breakfast is okay once in a while. Or order their daily quiche with salad. Delicatessen also serves a traditional Eggs Benedict with salmon, prosciutto or vegetables which is, yap, worth every bite.
Where Delicatessen, Mim Kemal Öke Cad. No. 19 Nişantaşı Istanbul
Why Homey little side road cafe with a living room atmosphere and a wonderful backyard. If you come here expect homemade food at its best. Watch the chefs in the kitchen make every single dish with dedication and love. The breakfast menu has all food lovers covered but come also back for lunch and dinner. Or just order their falafel for breakfast in the unlikely case you can’t decide on any of their delicious breakfast foods.
What Try the Turkish breakfast and order an extra portion of simit bread. It comes with various cheeses, sauces and jam. Make sure to eat all of the black sesame paste because I promise, this will change your life forever.
Where Kahve 6, Anahtar Sokak No.13 Cihangir
Why We kind of stumbled upon this super tiny and cozy breakfast spot by accident even though it has one of the highest ratings on Tripadvisor. Located in a small and quiet side street of Cihangir, the space inside is limited but once the sun comes out in spring the owner places several tables outside. Everything at Doğacıyız Gourmet is homemade, local, organic and the ingredients and produce carefully selected by the owner from various regions of Turkey. This Turkish breakfast spot is a real gem.
What Doğacıyız Gourmet offers a fixed menu. You’ll be served various cheeses, jams, spreads, sauces, vegetables, egg dishes, bread, olives, coffee and tea.
Where Doğacıyız Gourmet Kılıçali Paşa, Kasatura Sk. No:16, Beyoğlu
Why The Allis is a relaxing cafe and restaurant and part of the Soho House Istanbul. I absolutely love this place because it houses, yet again something you don’t find often in central Istanbul, a beautiful garden. The food, the atmosphere and people are hip, stylish and a little change to your average cafe. The Allis serves light breakfast, delicious smoothies and a calming atmosphere. Take a book or your laptop and makes yourself comfortable in one of the cozy lounge chairs.
What Avocado toast with poached eggs and chilli. Full stop. But let me know when you try their other breakfast items, I bet they are equally delicious. On Sundays, The Allis is home to a wonderful breakfast buffet.
Where The Allis, Evliya Çelebi Mahallesi, Meşrutiyet Cad. No:56 .Beyoğlu Istanbul (The Allis is open to the public and no Soho House membership is needed to eat here)
